February, 2014, Busan, Korea – Busan Port Authority(BPA) announced that it will use the Environment Ship Index(ESI) to reward clean ocean going vessels from January, 2014.

The Environmental Ship Index (ESI) measures a ship’s emissions based on the amount of nitrogen oxide (NOx), sulphur oxide (SOx), particulate matter (PM) and greenhouse gas it releases. ESI is used as a good indication of the environmental performance of ocean going vessels or ships.

BPA said that clean seagoing vessels which score 31 points or more on the Environmental Ship Index (ESI) will receive 15% discount on the GT part of their entrance fee of port dues in Busan. ESI discount at Busan Port is firstly implemented in Northeast Asian Ports, indicating that Busan Port is the front runner to develop green port policies.

BPA plans to put the ESI registered vessels lists into the Busan Port Management-Information System(PORTMIS). Container carriers calling at Busan Port will see automatic port due discount if their vessels are recorded at ESI and have more than 31 points or more.

The ESI was introduced on 1 January 2011. In the meantime, the ports of Rotterdam, Antwerp, Hamburg, Oslo, Kiel, Bremen and the ports of LA and NY/NJ are using ESI to reward clean ships.
BPA added that ESI discount is the first step of the green port policies and it has been under consideration to develop the second and third green policies to make Busan Port eco-friendly port.

BPA has already installed conduit of AMP(Alternative Maritime Power) under the terminal and changed the power system of RTGC from fuel to electricity at the Port of Busan.
