Early this morning the Bolivian flag m/v “HADDAD 1” arrived at the port of Herakion in Crete where the operation to discharge 14 (fourteen) containers  took place. The discharge of these containers was performed by officers from the local Port Authorities/Harbour Coprs, in the presence of Customs officers and the Attorney.

During the discharge of the first two containers which were loaded at the Turkish port of Iskenderoun en route to Libya, pallets with boxes where found and confiscated as they contained 491.950 bullets of 9mm, as well as 5, 000 guns – the type use by the police; the counting continues.

The vessel was spotted and detained in the early hours of yesterday about 20 nautical miles south east from Ierapetra, Crete by a OPV of the Harbour Corps/Hellenic Coast Guard carrying special forces personnel of the Cretan Port Authorities.

It is worth mentioning that all cargo documents/manifests did not mentioned the existence on board of these guns and ammunition which were thoroughly covered behind ordinary cargo (drawers, cupboards, cabinets and gym’s plastic carpets) at the inside back/end of the containers and this fact proves the well organised operation by the smugglers for this  illegal operation so that during a search operation to go undetected.

This operation is part of continuous and intensive controls by the Harbours Corps/Hellenic Coast Guard in order to supress various cases of organised crime and this is the result of using appropriately the information given by the Security and Protection of  the Sea-Borders department of the Harbour Corps/Hellenic Coast Guard.

There will also be an announcement at a later stage for the remaining twelve containers which have been dischared at the Port of Heraklion.

The Caretaker Shipping Minister Christos Zois warmly congratulated the officers of the Hellenic Coast Guard for their professionalism, training, performance and end result, as well as for the good use of the information given by the security and information services.

After drugs smugglers and human traffickers, guns and ammunition is the third most important ranking crime generating millions of dollars…
