ShippingInsightNORFOLK, Va. – Sept. 14, 2015 – (Marine NewsWire) The directors of SHIPPINGInsight today announced that U.S. Merchant Marine Academy professor Capt. David Moskoff has agreed to be a special guest speaker at the 2015 Fleet Optimization Conference & Exhibition. The annual event takes place Oct. 13-14, at the Marriott Hotel & Spa in Stamford, Conn.

A special area of focus for this year’s SHIPPINGInsight event is ship telematics, and Capt. Moskoff, an acclaimed expert on cyber security in the maritime industry, will kick-off a roundtable Oct. 14 discussing “Connected Ships and Cyber Security.” His subject will be “The Cyber Threat: How Serious Is It?”

Capt. Moskoff is a professor in the Marine Transportation Department – Nautical Sciences at the United States Merchant Marine Academy. A recognized expert in maritime cyber security, he has chaired panels and steering groups for various external symposiums, conferences and maritime-related exercises/drills. He has served as Assistant Academic Dean and Faculty Forum President. Capt. Moskoff holds a current U.S. Coast Guard unlimited master’s license and has commanded both steam and diesel ships.

“Shipowners are looking to Big Data as an important tool to gain business intelligence insights that can improve ship efficiency and fleet optimization, ” said SHIPPINGInsight co-director Jim Rhodes. “It’s true that Big Data can bring Big Value, but it also brings Big Risk when it comes to security of ship-to-shore data connections through commercial satellite channels. Capt. Moskoff is one of the top experts in the field, and his observations on the subject are extremely timely. He will be joined on the roundtable by industry experts from satellite communication networks, service providers, marine software developers and others.”

Delegates to SHIPPINGInsight 2015 can register online by Sept. 15 and take advantage of a $200 Early-Bird discount.
