Our forty-first weekly recapitulation of the shipping markets, their respective main indices and world geopolitics affecting same in 2015 and beyond, tonight Friday the 9th of October 2015, with John Faraclas of AllAboutShipping in London.

  • The BDI, the Baltic Dry Index, closed down eight points since yesterday Thursday the 8th of October at 809 points, which is 80 points down since last week’s 889 points!  That’s far below the Dec 2013 closing of 2, 274 points, a difference of 1, 465 points!  Our predictions continue verbatim to be more than accurate!
  • The BCI  down 49  points at 1, 549 points which is 382 points down since last week’s 1, 931 points; did I hear you say vo-la-ti-li-ty, eh!
  • The BPI was 25 points up at 761 which is 60 points higher since last week’s 701 points… Alleluia!
  •  The BSI was three points down since yesterday at 669 which is 22 points down since last week’s 691 points…and,
  • The BHSI was also down, but just two points at 380 which is 12 points down since last week’s 392 points. So how do the gurus counter to this fall?  We wonder!
  • The wets now: the Dirties and its BDTI index were just four points up at  790 which is 75 points plus since last week’s 725 points.-
  • The Cleans and its respective BCTI was down three points at 506 points; no change since last week!
  • The price of oil has risen, surprise surprise, close to US$ 49 – volatility and geopolitics will soon count a lot in affecting the price of the barrel; be on guard, either way, to avoid nasty surprises!

The Geopolitics front continues far worse and blur since last week. Hold your breath.

  • The Migrants still remains the top news, a drama/issue which hasn’t as yet shown its true face. Very simply: expect the worse given the inability of the politicians to solve this issue. Nasty surprise too is soon to be expected; above all the social cohesion in all countries will be disturbed!!!  Just wait to see what is yet to come, as in Grece there has been a surge of 7, 000 (seventhousand) migrants per day arrivng mainly to the Greek Islands; shame continues! Over two thousand deaths off the Lybian coast! Come on politicians, get your act together!
  • Greece has still a long way to go; the alarm is still on: Red Alert!  Without a liberal business attitude, no matter who governs, without Catharsis and political will NOTHING will be achieved! Add that if not a haircut, a crew cut is a must! The lenders have to digest this; period! It is their fault altogether!
  • In Germany the Migrants issue causes problems and let’s see if there are any more scandals!
  • In Ukraine the war is still on, and given Putin’s strategy in Syria and the wider Middle Easter region something not since 1900, Ukrainians really hold their breath… How will Presidnet Obama counter?
  • China: the big downturn begins, no matter what Beijing will think to alleviate the financial pains, no matter whether the Yuan is now the fourth most used currency. Big issues. Add the shipyards issue and see what you make! Caution!
  • As said last week, the Islamic State will be curbed but at a colossal financial and human cost! With Russia getting heavily involved expect more troubles there which will fuel a massive Migrants exodus! Troubles in Jerusalem too are not seen nicely in Washington….
  • Portugal voted per our feeling!!!!
  • Capital Link’s City of London event on the 7th of October was simply GREAT! Please read relevant coverage in other columns herein… See you at the CSR event on the 3rd of November…Do please check our UPCOMING and other events!
  • The Marine Money’s 17th Annual Greek Shipfinance Forum is coming up on the 14th of October!
  • In less thna 40 days the 40th anniversary of Intermodal Europe takes place in Hamburg Messe on the 17-19 November; don’t miss it!
  • We expect more news from WISTA-Turkey on the International event there, which from what we read and learn from Greek, Cypriot and other WISTA’s is doing well; and let’s get geared for WISTA-USA event next October
  • Finally, we continue to invite the world visiting Greece and its Islands; that will counter as a plus to the troubles Greece and its people are going through. Greece is for all seasons!  We will also continue to repeat the fact that the Turkish Government by allowing the traffickers to move the migrants to the Greek Islands not only spoils Greece’s tourism but will eventually create the worst explosion in the East Med… Let’s see what Europe does to Turkey and relax their leaders so we all avoid the big clash! Try Scopelos and Skyros islands in the North-west central Aegean off the Magnesia Prefecture; still nice weather to do islands hoping in the rest of the North Sporades Islands… Otherwise, do try St. Petersburg! There will be plentiful to see soon in less than a month at the World Travel Market in London’s Excel!
