North P&I Club has presented Christos Mathesis with its annual award for being the best officer cadet graduating from the National Merchant Marine Academy in Hydra today (4 December 2015).  Founded in 1749, the academy is the oldest and most prestigious in Greece.

Presenting the award for the tenth successive year, North’s director Tony Allen congratulated Mathesis on his achievement in the face of strong competition. He added, ‘I would also like to commend principal Vassilis Stavropoulos and his colleagues for their hard work and commitment. They have again produced a group of cadets who are a credit to the academy and to the future of Greek shipping’.

Mathesis was nominated for North’s award by academy staff on the basis of his exam results as well as their views on his prospects for success. On completion of his studies, Mathesis recently joined Maran Tankers of Angelicousis, one of North’s Greek members.  Other North Members which support the academy are Alpha Tankers, Avin, Minerva, Pantheon and Tsakos.

Each year North also runs a seminar at the academy on loss prevention and claims-related issues, a key part of which is a workshop of lessons learned from real-life incidents.

‘The focus of this year’s event was on collision avoidance and the human element, based on our recently published loss prevention guide Rocks and Hard Places – How to Avoid Them, ’ says Allen. ‘As usual, the cadets enthusiastically and knowledgeably took part, and we wish them all every success in their future careers’.

The 175 million GT, ‘A’ rated North opened its office in Piraeus 15 years ago, where it now employs 12 staff. Greek owners and operators currently account for 22% of North’s entered tonnage.

North is a leading global marine insurer providing P&I, FD&D, war risks and ancillary insurance to 130 million GT of owned tonnage on a mutual basis and 45 million GT of chartered tonnage. Through its guaranteed subsidiary Sunderland Marine, North is also a leading insurer of fishing vessels, small craft and aquaculture risks. The Club is based in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK with regional offices in Greece, Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore and Sunderland Marine offices worldwide. North is a leading member of the International Group of P&I Clubs (IG), with 11.6% of the IG’s owned tonnage. The 13 IG clubs provide liability cover for approximately 90% of the world’s ocean-going tonnage and, as a member of the IG, North protects and promotes the interests of the international shipping industry.
