On Saturday 12th December 2015, the “Maria Tsakos Foundation – International Center of Maritime Research and Tradition” organized at its premises in Chios, the first Excellence Awards Ceremony.

The event was honoured by the presence of the following authorities and representatives:

Reverend Stylianos Manolis, representing His Eminence the Archbishop of Chios, Psara and Oinousses, Markos, the Vice-Regional Manager of Chios, Mr. Stamatios Karmatzis, Brigadier Mr. Themistocles Grympiris, the Mayor of Chios, Mr. Emmanouil Bournous, the President of the Magistrate Court of Chios, Hon. Mrs. Maria Tompazi, Judge George Pantelidis, Deputy Regional Manager, Mr. Konstantinos Papadopoulos, Vice-Mayor, Mr. George Belegris, the Commander of the Fire Station of Chios, Mr. Iakovos Archontakis, Officer Asterios Varkaris representing the Police Authority of Chios, the Dean of the University of the Aegean, Dr. Ioannis Karkazis, the President of the Dept. of Shipping, Trade and Transport of the Aegean University, Prof. Helen Thanopoulou, former Minister of Mercantile Marine and Member of the Foundation’s Board of Directors, Mr. George Anomeritis, the President of the Chios Port Captains’ Club representing the Mercantile Marine School of Oinousses, Mr. Argyris Chatzelenis, the Director of the Marine Engineering School of Chios, Mrs. Maria Makka, as well as the members of the Advisory Committee of “Maria’s House”, Mrs. Ioanna Lemoniades, Mr. Efstratios Stavrinos and Mr. George Karamichalellis. Among the attendees were also trainees of both Mercantile Marine Schools.

The Foundation’s Director, Mr. Pavlos Kalogerakis, welcomed the guests. The representative of Tsakos Shipping Chios, Mr. Konstantinos Karamanis delivered a speech and Mr. George Anomeritis, also, delivered an opening speech on behalf of Capt. Tsakos.

The following received an Excellence Award, accompanied by prizes:
1. Menelaos Kyllis, graduated 1st from the Vocational High School of Kardamyla.
2. Christos Ioannou, graduated 1st from the Lyceum of Kardamyla.
3. Menelaos Kyllis, graduated 1st in grades in the Prefecture of Chios.

4. Apostolos Voulgarellis, 1st in grades.
5. Maria Kossena, 1st in grades.
6. Maria Farmaki, 1st in grades in the Final Exams.
7. Konstantinos-Michael Boulazeris, of Chios origin who entered the Mercantile Marine School of Oinousses, being 1st in grades.
8. Ioannis Giannas, of Chios origin who entered the Marine Engineering School of Chios, being 1st in grades.
9. Despoina Kossena, of Chios origin who entered the Department of Shipping, Trade and Transport of the Aegean University, being 1st in grades.

Later, the boarders of “Maria’s House” performed Christmas carols, the boarder Alexandros Papanastasopoulos pleased us with his unique performance on his saxophone, while the boarder George Pantelis recited a passage from the novel “Flower shore” by Alexandros Papadiamantis.

Chian athlete and Marathon winner Christophoros Meroussis was also honoured for his remarkable performance

The graduate boarders of “Maria’s House” also received financial support for their College studies.
Finally, the Chian athlete and Marathon winner, Mr. Christoforos Merousis, who ran first in the Athens Marathon, was also honoured for his remarkable sports performances.
After the closing, special pastry treats, made by our boarders, were offered to the guests.
