Earlier than usual due, to Christianity’s first** Easter Celebrations, comes our weekly market report; John Faraclas Writes:

The BDI was up five points since yesterday at 406 points; that’s plus 11 since last week’s closing at 395 points – better than going down…

The BCI 2014, the infamous capers were up seven points standing at 203 points and six overall since last week’s 197…

The Panamaxes enjoyed another eight points plus clocking 466 which is just three points up since last week’s 463…

The Supras obtained an extra five but an overall of an interesting double digit 24 points since last week’s 449 points… and the Handies, the BHSI with a plus two closed the week at 268, up eight points from the previous week’s closing at 260…

So, not “bad” given the circumstances but still a very bad market; whatever positive will only count to the more robust and capable companies. There is nothing here on the “all things being equal…” you know what I mean…

The Wets were completely opposite, a total downwards market, both from the last published figures of the BDTI and BCTI which stood at 803 (down 16!!!) and 499 (no change) and overall minus 69 points for the Dirties and two for the Cleans since last Friday ones!

The price of WTI as we …”ink” this recapitulation is below the US$ 40… Caution!

Lay-ups continue, bankruptcies continue and few, very few have the guts to go ahead. Let’s enjoy this shipping market’s challenge!

The Panama Canal looks set to open after its widening and all the improvements on about the 26th of June 2016! That will also alter quite a few issues in shipping!

The World Dire Straits, as I call the Canals – Suez, Panama, Malacca, Kiel, Gibraltar, Dover, Skagerrak and Kattegat The Bosporus, The Hormuz and a few other straits must be safeguarded given what we go through these days. It is very important…

The World Economy is still in a mess and will continue for the foreseeable future… this is serious; don’t believe what you read. In the absence of real political Business leaders and with Business hooligans in power, what do you expect!

Once again given the above as well as the geopolitical issues below, this is the best ever time to proceed and acquire new eco tonnage! A pure buyers’ market, subject as we numerous times have said- written, you have a good balance sheet and financiers to understand you.

On the Geopolitical front, the Brussels massacre and its …collateral news occupies much of the media’s coverage – too late though given the unperformed risk assessments, even against those perpetrators who decided to cut short the lives of so many innocent people, from the competent authorities; there is definite a missing link from what we hear and read and above all from what we understand. Pity. We hope that this time the enquiry to what happened will really uncover many loop holes in the system. NO ECXUSES following so many unsuccessful handling of situations (people arrested in Turkey and extradited back to Europe or lists in the US of Terrorists not being appropriately considered…). Too many lapses! Too much sex makes you short-sighted (that was the inscription on the ashes-trays in the sixties and seventies in Carnaby Street, remember? (totally wrong, of course). Equally…. Though, too much democracy (with a low case “d” – please do not spoil the real Athenian/Periklean Democracy- blows us up! Unfortunately, this is the truth. With all due respect, too many “human rights” for all those in Europe emanating from other places, you can see where has landed us!

The Migrants issue and following what happens in Brussels worsens and the so called close borders so to speak will create havoc in Greece and elsewhere with incalculable repercussions. The current Greek Government even on this issue lacked of any plan whatsoever and with the wrong people from the SYRIZA clan made it even worse. Pity, Pity, Pity. Europe too is to blame for playing and flirting around with Turkey! Shame, Shame, Shame! Only a USA Navy’s Naval Blockade can halt hte influx of Migrants fronm teh Anatolian Coast to Greece, its Islands and  Europe. Once again: Wake up!

On the ground, the Syrian Armed Forces entered Palmyra; the Iraqi Forces attack ISS in Mosul, but the Turks attack the Kurds. The War of the Absurd! Obviously the Islamist terrorists have never ever learnt the lesson: Never ever outshine the master! It is about time worldwide to saw them Aesop’s way: that of sour grapes and paid by the same coin…

The US presidential elections, as we have said, will produce a surprise, but this time we need though a very capable president to look after the …Augean Stables of Planet Ocean…

Obama continues his tour; after Cuba, Argentina with its prons and cons is his oyster…

Iranians are charged for cyber-attacks in the US! Let’s see how the Sanctions work – lifting them is one thing for both; implemented them, for both and the world at large yet another. Hype though must end…

President Putin and the Russians are watching what happens around and let’s see the reaction there – Ukraine possibly goes for yet another election…

The North Korean leader and his fundamentalists there must be curbed!

The Chinese economy is on a slow down; try to have your own view on the situation.

North Africa and in particular Egyptis a bit fragile… caution there too…

BREXIT and GREXIT still on the cards; decisions for both countries are very important – equally those in Brussels and in Berlin (to mention just a few centres in Europe), must understand the mess they have created. Wake up and end the hype before it is too late. The Migrants issue spectacularly exposed all of you! Pestering Greece can backfire!

Have a nice Easter and a long weekend break, but be on guard for every eventuality on all fronts!

*So Far Away: listen, read and study carefully the epic song of the Dire Straits… (for many reasons)

**Greek Orthodox Easter in a very summery one on the First of May. Christianity cannot even agree for one single day to celebrate Easter…

P.S. Read our last two days reports; we care a lot of what is happening, as many of us in the shipping industry travel; travel to board the ships we work for, travel to meet the ships we manage in the shipyards and ports, travel as maritime tourists on cruise ships – the list never ends. So mind your business you culprit terrorists, or else!

We also remind you that we have, and the writer in person, strogly condemned the Pirates and Terrorists around the Horn of Africa, better say in the west Indian Ocean, West Africa, South China Sea, The Straits of Malacca,  as well as the way we powerfull nations decided to counter them and  tackled the issue – still have to manage to get rid of them t o t a l l y/ c o p l e t e l y !!!
