The gap between education and training of cadets – survey to inform round table discussion

The IMarEST, together with Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM) Singapore, is holding a high-level round table discussion to discuss the key issues surrounding cadet training and what the shipping sector needs from newly qualified personnel.

Chaired by Bob Maxwell, managing director of BSM Singapore, the event will discuss the gap between education and training of cadets and bridging this gap in terms of knowledge when making the step into industry for both the engineering and the deck career routes.

The survey will take no longer than three minutes to complete, and aims to gauge views from across the sector, in order to support our upcoming round table discussion.

“We are determined to find out what the industry really thinks about these key issues, and invite those at every level to spend time completing the short questionnaire. The IMarEST will be publishing the results, and early indications will also be made available to those participating in our skills gap roundtable. Key personnel from leading maritime organisations within the sector will create a fruitful discussion on topics such as: how big the issue is, what the impact on shipping companies will be, what training is lacking, whether the quality of newly qualified crew is having an impact on the sector, and how the sector can attract talent.

The skills gap ‘invitation-only’ round table will take place in October 2016 in Singapore and has already attracted representatives of key organisations who between them cover shipping, naval and defence, academia and training.
