Capt. Antonio M. Padrón y Santiago, “IMO Maritime Ambassador” and Maritime Authority of Tenerife, attended the remodeling of the tuna vessel JANE IV, which has been made in NODOSA shipyards in Marin (Pontevedra)

Among other maintenance works, in the ship, owned by PESQUERA UGAVI, has been remodelated crew spaces, with the aim of improving the living conditions on board and the safety of the crew. Thus, the JANE IV will become one of the ships of reference fulfilling with the new AENOR standard “Tuna Responsible Fisheries”.

In addition to the IMO Maritime Ambassador, the visit was attended by: Ms. Rosa Quintana, Conselleira do Mar of the Xunta de Galicia, Mr. Andrés Hermida, Secretary General of Fisheries of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, Mrs. María Ramallo, Mayor of Marín, Mr. José Benito Suárez, President of the Port Authority of Marin, Mr. Javier Garat, Secretary General of the Spanish Fisheries Confederation (CEPESCA) and Mr. Julio Morón, Managing director of the Organization of Associated Producers (OPAGAC).

The new standard (UNE 195006), “Responsible fishing tuna”, includes compliance with the best practices in three areas: respect for the environment and the captured species, availability of better mechanisms for control of fishing activity and, third, working conditions and safety for 1.600 crew members -900 from third countries- embarked on the 40 ships of the fleet grouped in OPAGAC.
