From the clean-up

HELMEPA’s Educational Community and Public Awareness Campaign on the Marine Environment, Shipping and Sciences was concluded on a positive note in Karystos and Marmari, under the auspices of the local Municipality, with prospects for new synergies

The Campaign is supported by Lloyd’s Register Foundation (LRF)* and is carried out across 14 towns and cities of Greece between 2014 and 2017.

Αn environmental Exhibition was hosted for 10 days at the Cultural Centre of Marmari and was visited by 750 students and 60 teachers of 11 Primary and 3 High Schools of Marmari, Karystos, Styra and remote villages of southern Evia.

From the guided tour

On Wednesday 4 October HELMEPA conducted a ‘train-the-trainer’ Seminar for Teachers titled “The marine environment and us: ensuring a sustainable future” at the Environmental Awareness Centre of Karystos. Presentations carried out by HELMEPA’s staff included recent data and developments regarding the marine environment, shipping, climate change and marine litter as well as simple experiments that teachers may use in class to introduce their students to the world of science. Participating  teachers received a Certificate of Attendance and as new members of HELMEPA’ s “Marine Teachers” network they will have access to educational material and receive updates on the Campaign’s themes.

In the framework of the Campaign, the “Aegean Rebreath team of volunteer divers in cooperation with HELMEPA, the “Nautilus” and “Dikelas” diving centres,  the Municipality and the Port Authority of Karystos carried out  a two-day underwater cleanup of a reef and the port of Karystos.  Approximately 700 kgs of bulky items such as fishing nets and tires as well as many plastic bottles and other litter were collected from the seafloor. Discharged or lost fishing nets in particular constitute a major threat to marine ecosystems and organisms that get trapped in them. However, the positive response of fishermen and the local community of Karystos to this initiative is a sign of hope towards efficiently addressing this serious problem.

HELMEPA wholeheartedly thanks the Municipality of Karystos for placing the Campaign under its auspices and providing the space for hosting the Exhibits, the Directorate for Primary Education of Evia for the sound cooperation in organizing the schedule of school visits and especially the schoolchildren and teachers of southern Evia for their warm response to this educational initiative.
