GEN Announces 2017 Startup Nations Award Winners

The Global Entrepreneurship Network honored four individuals at the Startup Nations Summit, held in Tallinn, Estonia, for their leadership in implementing innovative public policies and programs to help entrepreneurs start and scale new businesses in their countries and around the world.

The Startup Nations Award winners were:

Jorge Lawson of Argentina for Local Policy Leadership; Mariano Mayer of Argentina for National Policy Leadership; and the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Team from the World Bank for Groundbreaking Policy Thinking. Mikk Vainik of the Estonian Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications received the Global Entrepreneurship Network Award for connecting start and scale ecosystems around the world.

Entrepreneurs, Thought Leaders Find Policy Solutions at SNS Policy Hack

As part of the 2017 Startup Nations Summit, entrepreneurs, thought leaders and other startup champions from around the world hacked eight different challenges – and found public policy solutions – through weeks of research and one day of in-person intense discussion, mentoring and live pitches.

The first SNS Policy Hack culminated with a live pitch competition, and team leader Rasha Tantawy, head of entrepreneurship at the Technology Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center in Egypt, and her team members took first place with their innovative solution addressing how to foster international expansion for agribusiness startups.

Steering Committee to Guide Startup Nations Ministerial

The Global Entrepreneurship Network and five government authorities responsible for growth entrepreneurship policy in their nations have formed a steering committee responsible for defining the intellectual framework of the Startup Nations Ministerial to be held next April in Istanbul, Turkey. The Steering Committee will drive the Ministerial, which convenes as part of the Global Entrepreneurship Congress. During the initial meeting, held recently at SNS 2017 in Tallinn, committee members began to discuss topics and potential outputs for the ministerial.

The Startup Nations Summit, a gathering of startup policymakers and ecosystem influencers took place in Tallinn. At the heart of the event was the policymaking hackathon, SNS Policy Hack, involving two teams of Estonian policymakers as well as teams representing Allied for Startups, the Netherlands, Mexico, Chile, Egypt and Guatemala. Surabaya Selected to Host Startup Nations Summit in 2018

The Global Entrepreneurship Network announced that it would partner with the City of Surabaya to host the next Startup Nations Summit in Indonesia in November 2018. The summit gathers and connects policymakers and advisors to explore innovative regulatory changes and policy initiatives to help accelerate new firm formation and entrepreneurial growth around the world. The announcement was made by Tri Rismaharini, mayor of Surabaya, at the conclusion of Startup Nations Summit 2017 in Tallinn, Estonia.
