The BDI (Baltic Dry Index) gained 19 points and overall 30 since last Friday the 2nd of February thanks to the Capers’ surge… Geopolitics and the Global economy in tatters… John Faraclas’ daily and weekly market briefing:

The BCI gained 128 points today standing at 1,790 points and 320 since last week (1,470)  “making” waves. Wonder for how long this can continue as volatility might sink it again…

The Panamaxes and all the other indices continued to lose; the BPI lost 13 points and now stands at 1,250; on a weekly basis the loss was 109 points – down from 1,359 points.

The Supras’ losses stood on a daily basis at 825 – down eight and on a weekly basis the loss was 47 points – from 872…

The Handies’ too were on the losing side; on a daily basis the loss was just three points – 526 and on a weekly 21 – from 547!

As the situation stands with only one size on the rise we reiterate the view that one size cannot form or dictate the markets… Meantime shipping for the very very very few is here to stay…

The Wets with mixed feelings… The last published BDTI (Dirties) and BCTI (Cleans) stood at 643 – minus  five and 619 – plus five respectively. On a weekly basis the Dirties lost 18 points – from 661 and the Cleans gained 21 – from 598…

The WTI  stood earlier on at US$ 59.20 – thank God below the US$ 60 mark… Time to see the US$ 50 mark in support of the poor masses all over Planet Ocean! Last week it stood at US$ 65.80 causing unnecessary harm for billions of people…

The Geopolitical front still gets worse. All main issues remain and let’s see how we confront the unthinkable…

Still the number one issue remains that of the MIGRANTS; the despicable handling by all involved particularly by the UN and its special envoys with no power whatsoever, proves the inhumane world we live in; no excuses please, shame! We have to stress the importance of solving the MIGRANTS issue as if the current situation continues the repercussions to our society will be incalculable! The social cohesion is already broken! Wonder: will we ever learn?

The Wars in Syria and Iraq continue and obviously the escalation and spreading of the hostilities – now including more countries, will end up in a carnage; again the UN’s inability in monumental!

Turkey continues to pester all its neighbours; invading others under the pretext of terrorism and many more excuses. Turks continue the blackmail in all fronts and Turkey is a pariah state. Those who will regret one day the assistance and cover up they offer to Turkey are Turkey’s backers… In the interior the country is in a mess given the arrests – which continue every day of all president Erdogan’s enemies… Violating the Greek airspace and territorial waters in such an unprecedented way as well as creating revolts in the background all over the Balkans will lead sooner or later in a total War… The great powers, NATO and the EU have a responsibility…

Greece needs a total revamp! Internally the Greeks continue to exorcise themselves and shoot between their feet… The current situation, given the inability of its politicians to improve the conditions for the Greek people, strengthens our position for the need of an Aristos team to govern the country for the next ten years; end of the story. Same applies for Greece’s foreign affairs: in tatters. Turkey’s aggression in the Aegean, the entire East Med provoking Cyprus, the Syrian intrusion, the Balkans… are issues dictating the need of the Aristos to govern! Add the issue of Greece’s northern morphoma state on its name and see for yourself the need of change. Is Novartis a real issue? Time will tell, but all things being equal we need to see a transparent ending from and for both sides… Imagine the unthinkable… O tempora o mores… Anyway, the Greek Carnival is on…

In Cyprus  the re-election of Nikos Anastassiades as president raises hopes in the region despite the aggression by Turkey in the Cypriot EEZ; the latest episode involving ENI’s drill ship is a serious one for strong nerves and proving how unable are the UN and the EU, needless to say NATO to stop these incidents. CAUTION…

The Balkans remain the powder keg of Europe; Albanians want to expand, so does FYROM, an unidentified state desperately seeking a name as the major powers  – and Europe in particular, “cannot” exercise zero tolerance… Shame, as there are  ineluctable facts of history and the Greek people – forget the governments,  at end of the day will NOT give in! Between 600 and 500BC Ancient Geek were spread all over Europe and the known World. Between 300 and 150 BC Alexander The Great spread  and led the foundation of the Greek language as the FIRST officially globalised language, NOT the so called “Macedonian” one that the government of Skopje wishes to “believe” that exists – by the way when the Skopjeans go to Bulgaria for talks and bring interpreters, the Bulgarians have the laugh of their lives… Now you know!!!

BREXIT moves invariably and looks likely it might derail Europe, particularly in the financial sense.  Watch this space as Michel Bernier, the EU BREXIT negotiator said the UK must “accept the ineluctable consequences of its decision to leave the EU, to leave its institutions and its policies”.  Moreover he warned that a transition period immediately after Brexit in 2019 is “not a given”. Despite all these ups and downs, to and fro negos – to use a shipbroking term/language, we are confident that in the long run the United Kingdom will be better off far beyond what the EU propaganda and local agnostics believe and say. In my view it will be better off  Far from the Madding Crowd… The EU becomes an ultra protectionist block… and German led Brussels, sorry but as yet cannot deliver! Time will tell! Meantime good to read that Eurostar is launching a London to Amsterdam route!

In Germany things look likely that there might be a grande coalition which already looks a lost cause. Too many cooks spoil the broth… Frau Merkel now holds the hot potato… Let’s hope this coalition works, as otherwise not just Germany, the EU might collapse…

It’s always quiet before the storm and this applies to Madrid’s attitude towards Catalonia…

In Italy the Macerata incident might explode if same is not properly tackled; once again THE MIGRANTS!

In France we had an action film plot kidnap and ransom at the French – Swiss border… We expect the arrests of all these culprits… Shame!!! The Eiffel Tower, the symbol of Paris, has been closed since Tuesday due to snow as officials say it is too dangerous. The level of snow is unprecedented since 1987 – 12 cm !

Wonder what do you make with the Russians nuclear scientists and the Bitcoin saga at the Federal Nuclear Centre in Sarov; it was good that the authorities made these respective arrests. Russia lives the pre-presidential elections period once again and president Putin has high expectations whilst at the same time moves the world upside down on many fronts…We suggest controlled CAUTION! It is interesting though to see whether the strawberries field man, Pavel Grudinin, can make any gains; indeed it is strawberries field for ever …à la carte…

In the African continent things are getting worse; in South Africa the Zuma saga now becomes dangerous for all involved. Pesident Zuma himself is being accused of scandals following past success; obviously he dislikes being discredited, hence the best thing to do is to immy step down. CAUTION ! This coming Sunday is the 100th anniversary of the birth of Nelson Mandela  and I guess all down in South Africa must get there act together not to spoil the post Mandela era… Meantime Capetonians are feeling the strain from drought-hit region and tonight’s rain was like manna from havens! In Egypt president Sisi does his best to defeat the dangerous Sinai militants which might cause trouble for the Suez Canal; CAUTION as you never ever know…

At the other side of the Atlantic and in particular in Mexico where the  leader of the notorious Zetas drug cartel José María Guízar Valencia has been caught; Valencia is wanted in the US, which had offered a US$5mio (£3.6m) reward for his capture. That was a good catch! Nearby in Colombia demobilised Colombian rebel group FARC says it is suspending political campaigning for upcoming elections following threats to its candidates. Back in 2016 the FARC rebels have signed a peace deal with the government of Colombia… CAUTION as FARC now is a political party…! In Venezuela things are getting far worse than our predictions and unless something spectacular happens the country will collapse to the detriment of its people; pity. Thousands of Venezuelans cross into neighboring Colombia every day to look for work  even on a temporary basis and to buy essential goods. Nichoals Maduro has to come down to his senses before he comes down to his knees!

Going north in the USA president Donald Trump has too many open fronts. A closure of the Federal Government – the second in a few weeks, brought another nightmare but same was adverted the last moment. The financial and economic situation and the accusations from Europe of a currency war with a dropping USDollar, might make him think twice on Europe and the Euro, unless… The escalation in Syria is worrying him a lot and might worry him more… CAUTION how he handles this long standing issues. Let’s hope he uses his best business knowledge and experience to solve many outstanding and very demanding issues which might rock Peace’s boat… Financially the USA  had a very bad week and Wall Street sends warnings all over… There is indeed a financial bubble and a correction is needed but the outcome will wipe-off billions sooner or late. Be on guard…

In China controversy over a book with the Swedes  makes waves… China MUST also get its finances in order. This is paramount!

The USA, Japan and Korea are very sceptical with North Korea despite the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang and a possible rapprochement. OK, fine one team, the North Korean’s leader sister Kim Yo Jong goes south but can she broker a Peace deal there? Will her brother, who trusts her, back-off and establish Peace in the Korean peninsular ?

In Austalia’s Great Barrier Reef, swimming deaths back in 2016 prompt new safety rules; CAUTION!

On another tone, today marks the Day of the Greek Language, the most powerful language all over Planet Ocean. “The  Greek Language is the Soul, the Soul of our civilization. The Soul full of Light which sheds light all over the Globe as same is being refracted  in many other languages, reflecting also the history of humanity! Given that without light life doesn’t exists, conversely without the language we all lack of civilization. The Greek was the language that Homer sung, the Greek was the language of the tragedies as well the language of modern poets… It was the language that tried to create a justice system in order for us, the humans to co-exist and give birth to Democracy. Within Democracy, man created Philosophy, Science, the Arts! Even today, when a language, any language speaks for Philosophy, Science and the Arts it borrows words from the Greek language! If for any reason the Greek words “decide” to  leave us, the entire world will be unable to think and  communicate, not just the Greeks. The obvious will be that eventually in all languages and in particular the sectors of philosophy and science the Dark Ages will re-start… It is because the Greek language is the  Light, the Light of Civilisation; the Light full of Soul!” The text (in free translation from Greek), comes from Vaggelis Eliopoulos, a candidate for the 2018 Andersen Prize; an ambassador for children and teenagers books. A respective sketch was drawn by Christos Demos, also a candidate for the same prize. A few years of years ago, on the 22nd of September 2014, we uploaded an article on Prof. Stavros Theofanides’ book  “English is a Greek Dialect”… Do you know for example were the name Scotland comes from…? ΣΚΟΤΕΙΝΗ = SCOTLAND

Have a nice evening as well as a nice weekend and be on guard from any trouble emanating from Pirates and Terrorists looming in the background wherever you are on Planet Ocean!
