The non-profit, charitable and cultural organization “Friends of the Municipal Theater of Piraeus” has the honour to invite you to the extraordinary performance of “The Notebooks of Anzel Kourtian” which will take place in Piraeus, at the premises of “Saint Paul” Greek-French School, on May 7th, 2018 at 8 pm.

Greek-Armenian actress Christina Alexanian undertook a difficult and demanding solo performance to portray Anzel Kourtian in a theatrical adaptation of the book entitled “The Notebooks of Anzel Kourtian” written by Anzel Kourtian herself, a survivor of the Armenian Genocide (1915) and the Destruction of Smyrna (1922). It is essentially the story of war seen through the eyes of a child. Bursa, Afyonkarahisar, Smyrna and Mytilene are the stops of Kurtian’s roaming, before she settled in the Greek island of Crete and moved later to Kokkinia in Piraeus, where she started her own family and fulfilled her life with her children and grandchildren. The serious atmosphere of the Armenian Genocide and the Destruction of Smyrna, the migration and the survival, the loss of family members, the pain and the disaster, arouse deep emotions and chills in the hearts and souls of the spectators that become part of the events narrated on stage. The text is both rich and unadorned, maintaining a wonderful balance between tragic and lighthearted moments.

Our beloved city of Piraeus was chosen to host this performance, as it has hosted immigrants in several different occasions throughout our recent history and has always been supportive to vulnerable groups of people by helping them feel “at home” and create a new life. To that effect, everyone is welcome to attend and become part of the tragic but totally real story of Anzel Kourtian, to share with us all the powerful moments and emotions as they will be revived by Christina Alexanian, who will definitely captivate the audience.

The theatrical production is an initiative of the Cultural Organization of the Municipality of Nea Smyrni (Athens), commissioned by Vaggelis Chatzatourian, as President of the Cultural Organization, and will be held under the auspices of the Embassy of Armenia in Greece, with the kind support of the “Saint-Paul” Alumni Association.
