The Charles Taylor Greek Shipping Tennis Tournament 2018

The eighth Charles Taylor Greek Shipping Tennis Tournament began on 20 April with stormy winds but, by the weekend, the weather had improved enough to allow 108 tennis players – executives of 76 shipping companies – to deliver some spectacular performances on the court.

On Sunday afternoon, we also held a new category for the first time: social mixed doubles, with the referee, Tereza Tabossi, kicking off the start of the matches and announcing the partners’ changes.

The results of this year’s tournament are:

  • Men’s singles 39 and under – Petros Skiadas of Unisea Shipping had a “walk over” against Dimitris Tolaros of Fender S.A.
  • Men’s singles 40 and over – Holman Fenwick & Willan’s Dimitri Vassos was defeated by George Kalargyros of Almi Marine Management S.A.
  • Men’s singles 50 and over – Andrea Caffaratti of PL Ferrari grabbed the victory from his colleague Nicola Olivieri
  • Women’s singles – Union Commercial’s Elpida Skoufalou defeated Carolyn Biggar, maritime lawyer
  • Men’s doubles – George Kaldis of Safe Bulkers Inc together with Gregory Psaltis of Ormos Compania Naviera dominated the duo Andrea Caffaratti and Nicola Olivieri of P L Ferrari
  • Mixed Doubles – Union Commercial’s Elpida Skoufalou with Aris P. Pitta of Eurobulk Ltd. grabbed the title of winners from Roswell Tankers’ Vera Papopova and George Kaldis of Safe Bulkers Inc.
  • Social Mixed Doubles – The golden medal was won by Alexandra Sakellaridou of Trafigura and Ronan Le Du of Ince & Co.
  • The silver medal was won by Kerry Petropoulos of P & P Shipping Hellas and John Apostolidis of Bery Maritime Inc.

Winners, runners up and company members

Speeches were delivered by Mark Collins of The Standard Club and Angeliki Kallini of Richards Hogg Lindley. Philip Stephenson, Regional Claims Director of The Standard Club’s Piraeus office, thanked the players for their participation and performances and the sponsors Wilson, E-tennis and Forty Love for their continued support of the tournament. Tereza Tabossi (referee) and Mary Miliou (Standard Club) were given particular thanks for their excellent organization of the whole event.

The trophies were awarded by James Bean, Nick Frampton, Anna Doumeni, Harris Papaspyropoulos, Jamie Green and Christina Soulaki from The Standard Club and Angeliki Kallini on behalf of Richards Hogg Lindley.

Giorgos Margaritopoulos of Richards Hogg Lindley presented the Prize Giving Ceremony, which was followed by a reception for all players, supporters and distinguished members of the Greek shipping industry.

During the tournament Euro 1,120 was donated for the Ark of the World.

The tournament, for the eighth consecutive year, was organized by Charles Taylor Plc., The Standard Club Europe Ltd, Richards Hogg Lindley, The Strike Club and The Standard Syndicate.
