On 7th of May 2018, an extraordinary performance of The Notebooks of Anzel Kourtian took place in Piraeus, at the premises of Saint Paul Greek-French School, organised by the non-profit, charitable and cultural group Friends of the Municipal Theatre of Piraeus. The narrative is based on moving stories of the tragedies of a century ago which befell Armenia and the Greek communities in Asia Minor. Emily Lionis writes:

More than 400 attendees were welcomed by the board members of hosts. Among the audience were leading personalities of Athens and Piraeus, including many people from shipping as well as a great number of representatives of Greek-Armenian associations. In her opening salutation, Eleni Meleti, president of the Friends organisation, welcomed the capacity audience and explained why the city of Piraeus was chosen to host this performance, as it has embraced immigrants on several occasions throughout recent history and has always been supportive of vulnerable groups of people by helping them feel “at home” and create a new life.

…and another group  with Olga Karaververis, Rena Vasilaki, Irene Daifas, Christina Alexanian, Voula Sarantari and other participants

The audience had the chance to experience immersive moments and some powerful emotions generated by the truly captivating performance of Greek-Armenian actress Christina Alexanian, who undertook a difficult and demanding solo performance to portray Anzel Kourtian in a theatrical adaptation of the book entitled The Notebooks of Anzel Kourtian written by Anzel Kourtian herself, a survivor of the Armenian Genocide (1915) and the Destruction of Smyrna (1922).

The theatrical production was an initiative of the Cultural Organisation of the Municipality of Nea Smyrni (Athens), commissioned by Vaggelis Chatzatourian, as president of the cultural organisation, and took place under the auspices of the Embassy of Armenia in Greece, with the kind support of the Saint-Paul Alumni Association.
