Spectacular: Royal Ascot 2018

One of the most anticipated sports events of the year, Royal Ascot, drew to a close last Saturday. It is a major feature in the British social calendar and makes for one of the British summer’s essential events. Over 300,000 people undertake the annual visit to Berkshire during Royal Ascot week, making this Europe’s best-attended race meeting and attracting owners of many of the world’s finest racehorses to compete for more than £7.3m in prize money.Dr. Evelyn Stefanakis was there with her camera:

This year, the races took place under a blistering sun making the total five days of the races nevertheless a most splendid experience for the audience.

Royal Ascot dates back to 1711 when it was founded by Queen Anne. Every year Royal Ascot is attended by Elizabeth II and other members of the Royal Family such as the Prince of Wales, arriving each day by horse-drawn carriage with the Royal procession taking place at the start of each race day and the raising of the Queen’s Royal Standard.

There are three enclosures attended by guests and of these the Royal Enclosure is the most prestigious. Access to the Royal Enclosure is restricted, with high security. First-time applicants must apply to the Royal Enclosure Office and gain membership from someone who has attended the enclosure for at least four years. For existing badge-holders, an invitation is sent out by Her Majesty’s Representative. The badge-holder’s name is written onto the badge and can be used only by that person; the colours of the badges vary each day for one-day applicants. Those in the Royal Enclosure have options of fine dining and hospitality, and a selection of bars. The dress code is strictly enforced. For women, only a day dress with a hat is acceptable, with rules applying to the length and style of the dress. In addition, women must not show bare midriffs or shoulders. For men, black or grey morning dress with top hat is required. The fashion  at Royal Ascot makes headlines every year in prestigious fashion magazines and the daily press.

Tradition at its best!

The Gold Cup event is on Ladies’ Day on the Thursday.

This Saturday, the last day of the races, the Royal Procession started at 14:00 sharp, with the Royal Landaus, led by four Windsor Greys, along the famous Straight Mile. This spectacular journey has signalled the start of the Royal Meeting since 1825.

After the completion of the Royal Procession, the races started at exactly 14:30. A total of six races each day send the audience into a frenzy of betting and cheering on their horse to win.

Here they come…

The spectacular crescendo of the day involves singing around the bandstand, from the choir of the Royal Welsh Guards.
