The island of Paros was the last port of call of the contesting sailing boats in the 55th Aegean Sailing Regatta, to which HORC (Hellenic Offshore Racing Club) and HELMEPA had given the motto “To Save the Seas”. Motivated by this motto, the crews of both the boats participating in the Rally and that of the escorting Hellenic Navy Ship “Commander BLESSAS”, under the guidance and coordination of HELMEPA staff members, voluntarily cleaned beaches on the islands of Amorgos and Lipsi, thus demonstrating their awareness for the protection of the environment.

A similar operation had been scheduled for Livadia beach, in front of Paros Nautical Club for the morning of the 27th of July. However, the absence of winds kept the majority of the boats idle off the island of Naxos, whereas at the same time a sudden gale prevented the crews of the few boats already in port from carrying out the cleaning of the beach.

HELMEPA appreciates the cooperation of HORC’s chairman, John Maragoudakis and his associates, the Nautical Club of Paros, the crews of the boats which participated in the 55th Aegean Sailing Rally as well as the Captain and the crew of the naval ship, who, in spite of their fatigue, took part in the cleaning of the beaches of the first islands they called at. As for the island of Paros, HELMEPA looks forward to a new “rendezvous” of a future cooperation and wishes to all an uneventful, pleasant time for the remainder of the Greek Summer.
