COPERNICUS Collaborative Vision for a Sustainable Ocean: Investment and Innovation for Ocean Data and Deliverables

High-Level Plenary Session Sponsored by WOC Member Mercator Ocean International to Explore Investment and Innovation Needs and Opportunities for Expanding Ocean Data Monitoring for the Blue Economy

The Sustainable Ocean Summit (SOS) 2019 session on “COPERNICUS Collaborative Vision for a Sustainable Ocean: Investment and Innovation for Ocean Data and Deliverables” will be convening EU policy makers, ocean data leaders and the investment community to discuss the advancement of investment and innovation for ocean data deliverables on 22 November, from 8:30 to 10:00.

This Plenary Session is generously sponsored and co-organized by WOC Member Mercator Ocean International, service provider of ocean information in real and delayed time that services the public interest. Since 2009, Mercator Ocean has been contributing significantly to the leadership of European operational oceanography, especially in the context of the COPERNICUS programme.

COPERNICUS is the European Earth observation and monitoring programme, and aims to give the European Union autonomous and operational capability in space-based observation facilities and in situ (measurements in the atmosphere, in the ocean and on the ground). It operates six interlinked environmental monitoring services for the oceans, the atmosphere, territorial development, emergency situations, security and climate change.

The SOS 2019 Plenary Session on “COPERNICUS Collaborative Vision for a Sustainable Ocean: Investment and Innovation for Ocean Data and Deliverables” will discuss:
• How can EU policy makers advance the role of entrepreneurs, services and industries in developing innovation for ocean monitoring in support of the Blue Economy, such as the Copernicus program?
• How can the Digital Ocean and cloud-based solutions help support innovation for ocean monitoring and ocean sustainable development?
• What are the investment needs and opportunities for improving and expanding ocean monitoring for the Blue Economy?

This high-level plenary will be chaired by SOS 2019 Chairman and President of the French Maritime Cluster Frédéric Moncany de Saint-Aignan. Distinguished speakers include:

• Pierre Bahurel, CEO, Mercator Ocean International
• Tomas Jonsson, Policy Officer, DG GROW / Space Data for Societal Challenges & Growth, European Commission
• Anne-France Didier, Territorial Policy Advisor, Ministère de la Transition Écologique et Solidaire (MTES), Délégation à la Mer et au Littoral-Pilote ODD14, France
• Rémi Gruet, CEO, Ocean Energy Europe
• Yanis Souami, Founder and CEO, SINAY – Marine Data Solution
• Marilou Suc, Marketing Manager, BIOCEANOR
• Olivier Raybaud, Founding Partner, Blue Oceans Partners

The recently published Blue Book “Copernicus for a Sustainable Ocean” promotes and tells the story of the Copernicus Marine Service to inform all European citizens, including policy-makers, students and youth, on how the Copernicus Marine Service benefits society as a whole. Among its contributors are decision-makers, entrepreneurs, experts, concerned citizens, and scientists from all over the world that are directly involved in ocean-related issues.

Limited copies of the Blue Book will be available for collection at the SOS 2019 on 22 November.

With the theme of “Investing in Ocean Futures: Finance and Innovation for the Blue Economy”, the SOS 2019 will be the foremost international business conference dedicated to investment and innovation for ocean sustainable development.
