Our sixteenth weekly recapitulation of the shipping markets, their respective main indices and world geopolitics affecting same in 2015, tonight Friday the 17th of April 2015, with John Faraclas of AllAboutShipping in London.

  • The BDI managed to climb up four points at 597, which is 17 points up since last week’s 580 points, still under the 600 point barrier creating, overall,  further uncertainty to all fields in the shipping spectrum.
  • The BCI moved above the 500 point gaining 11 points since yesterday at 532, which is 66 points higher than last week’s 466 points…
  • The BPI was up just six points at 642 which is 42 points since last week’s 600 points.
  • The BSI was up seven points at 619, which is just three points up since last week’s 616 points; a bit of a stiff size…
  • The BHSI was down two points since yesterday at 358, which is 15 points down since last week’s 373 points; tough times here.

So, all in all, once again a weak market despite the plus overall mark…

Again, a “different” story all together for the wets; up since the last published BDTI and BCTI, but no further strength with mixed results yet again.

  • The Dirties and its BDTI index was up just two points at 800, which is also up 29 points since last week’s 771 points…
  • The Cleans and the respective BCTI was down seven at 702 points , but up 24 since last week’s 678 points…no strength at all…

We maintain the view, alike last week (…over a year now), that this is still a good market for start ups and for established companies with strong financial position, listed or unlisted to purchase cheap tonnage – newbuilds or second-hand ones!

The geopolitics once again continue to be in turmoil and we believe that strange things will soon happen, if the politicians don’t come down to their senses!

  • Ukraine, per our initial view last year, remains open for more trouble, if the West continues to push things; Vladimir Putin has his own agenda and it will be too difficult to confront him, unless somebody pays the damage; the bill will be too dear and beyond any imagination…
  • Greeks will prove vital for the Eurozone, as well as for the world economy and whoever want’s them out will pay a hefty penalty of incalculable proportions; just wait and you will confirm our view… Equally, the current Greek government, if they wish to hold on power and serve the Greek people, must understand that their voters’ interest comes second; it is for all Greeks to be comfortable and secure to all intents and purposes! If they fail with the current “negotiations”, shall we introduce capital punishment?
  • The Migrants tragedy continues; the politicians have so far failed to produce a coherent safe policy and protect, in this instance, the European borders. Everytime there is an excuse. So all things being equal, those who created this mess in north Africa, and as east as Afghanistan,  must pay the damage and house all these ten millions awaiting to enter the EU from the western/south coast of Turkey and North Africa. Turkey in particular, which for three decades now violates the EU frontiers, must pay EUROS one million for each Migrant leaving its shores! Turkey must also stop violating the European Union frontiers! FRONTEX should be allowed to do their job properly; they can! The latest Italian tragedy with the Migrants must alarm the world! Can Brussels deliver? The influx of Migrants will create havoc and financial as well as political and religious and racial issues if not contained. Time for the IMO to step in!
  • Hillary Clinton has high hopes now; we will love to see her getting the job! Read her lips!
  • The Middle East goes from worse to worse…all over!!!!
  • China says it is defending its territory and sovereignty with defence works under way in Spratly Islands. Caution please, as an airstrip can also ground you…
  • Panama Maritime 2015 was the super event in the other side of the Atlantic!
  • The UK Elections might end up with the Tories coming first, but can they for a government on their own? The NHS, Defence Spending and the Migrants issue the three most crucial points/issues!
